BASEBALL MULTIMEDIA SUNDAY OCTOBER 24, 2010 BRIAN “Professor B” Davis Staff Writer- Well Giants fans from Northern California to all the through the valleys of Carmel & Fresno through the upper northern coast of Sacramento all the way through Chico California the San Francisco Giants are the new champions of the National League by dethroning the two time National League champions Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 3-2 when Giants third baseman Juan Uribe hit an opposite field homer to right field into the seats to give the Giants a 3-2 lead after the Phillies jumped on Giants starter Johnathan Sanchez for an early 2-0 lead he would ‘nt survive the bottom half of the third inning after hitting Phillies second baseman Chase Utley. Utley, threw the ball back at Sanchez then he started to woof back at Utley then both benches emptied but no punches were thrown. In the bottom half of the ninth inning Giants closer Brian Wilson with the tying and winning runs on first & second base flashes of last year’s game 4 classic when Jimmy Rollins hit a game winning two-run walk-off double off Dodgers closer Johnathan Broxton but this time fate would not favor the Phillies as Giants closer Brian Wilson struck out former National League MVP Ryan Howard looking to give the San Francisco Giants their first pennant and World Series since 2002 their fourth National League Pennant since moving to the west coast since 1958 and are looking for their first ever World Series title on the west coast and the franchise first when they were in New York in 1954. Giants outfielder Cody Ross who was claimed off waviers from the Florida Marlins in August who batted .350 with three homers and three doubles and five RBI’s was named the NLCS MVP Ross, three homers was the most by a San Francisco Giant since Jeffery Lennard’s four against the St.Louis Cardinals in 1987.

Ross will join the list of unlikely players like in a postseason like Bucky Dent, Brian Doyle, Rick Dempsey, Buddy Bianclana, Marty Barrett, Dave Henderson, Mark Lemke, Francisco Caberea, Jim Leyritz, Chad Curtis, and Benny Agbayani as unlikey performers to perform in baseball’s postseason ultimated performers.

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 20,2010 Brian “Professor B” Davis Staff Writer- In the National League Championship Series at game 3 at AT&T Park in San Francisco the Giants behind the Matt Cain beat the Phillies by a score of 3-0 on Wednesday. Cain went 7.0 innings of giving no runs on a pair of hits with five strikeouts. Phillies losing pitcher Cole Hammels went six innings giving up three runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. Giants outfielder Cody Ross who was claimed by the Florida Marlins back in August got another RBI hit to give the Giants a 2-0 lead then first baseman Aubry Huff added a RBI hit to score Pat Burrell to make the final score 3-0. The Phillies offense wit runners in scoring position were 0-for-5 at the plate. With the win the Giants have a 2-1 series lead and the Giants have won 10-out-of their last 13 games since 1989 and since the NLCS went to the four out of a best-of-seven format in 1985 15-out-of-the last 19 NLCS teams up 2-1 in the Series went on and won the national League Pennant.

For the Phillies it was their first shutout in postseason play since 1983 when the Phillies were shutout in game 5 of the ’83 World Series against the Baltimore Orioles when Scott McGregor threw a five-hit complete game shutout in the World Series clincher over the Phillies by a score of 5-0. For the Phillies Joe Blanton who hasn’t pitched since September will have the task to be their stopper the Phillies face the proposition that the offense does’nt get their act they could face a 3-1 defcit but if the Phillies win today the momentum will swing back to the Phillies and the home field advantage assure there will be a game 6 Saturday night and with ace Doc Halladay scheduled to pitch the critical game 5 against Tim Lincecum who knows but as for the Giants 21-year old rookie Madison Bumgardner faces the biggest challange if he can continue shut down the Phillies high octane hitters and the Giants get timley hits the Giants could be 3-1 and putting the two-time National League Champion Phillies on the brink of elimination and the Giants on the brink of their first trip to the World Series since 2002 and their fourth National League Pennant since moving to the West Coast in 1958. Cody Ross who’s batting .444 in the series needs to still do his thing at the plate and Giants fans needs the 12th man.

BRIAN “Professor B” DAVIS STAFF WRITER- The San Francisco Giants wins the first round of this heavyweight National League Championship Series bout against the two-time National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia Saturday night winning by a score of 4-3. The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when Giants outfielder Cody Ross hit a solo homer off Phillies ace Roy Halladay who just coming off the second no-hitter in postseason to give the Giants a 1-0. Then the Phillies responded in the bottom half of the frame when catcher Carlos Ruiz hit a opposite homer into the rightfield seats to tie the game at 1-1. Then later the Ross added a two-run homer to extend the Giants lead to 3-1 Ross would ended going 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of homers and three RBI’s and Pat Burrell also went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Giants ace and reining two-time National League Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum went 7.0 innings giving up three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts while his counterpart Roy Halladay went 7.0 innings giving up four runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts suffers his first loss in the postseason also for the Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth added a two-run homer in a losing cause. Giants closer Brian Wilson picks up his third save in four chances in the postseason.

With the win the Giants leads the best of seven series of this NLCS 1-0 and the Giants will sent Johnathan Sanchez on the mound against the 2005 NLCS MVP Roy Oswalt for game 2 of the NLCS the first pitch will be at 5:19pm pst/8:19pm est. For the Giants the win last night assured they could do no worse than at least a split as the series will move to San Francisco on Tuesday but for the two-time National League Champion Phillies this is a must win game their high octane offense must get going tonight. If the offense does not come through and continues it’s slump and the Giants continue to pitch and scrap and find a way to win not to mention if the Giants beat the Phillies tonight they will have a comanding 2-0 series lead and the Phillies heading out to the coast will be in big trouble and (the Giants almost sweep a three-game series from the Phillies out in San Francisco back in late April) and if that situation happens the series may not come back to Philly at all so the pressure is all on the Phillies tonight . In Phillies postseason history in the NLCS history as not fallen in Philadelphia favor when losing the first game of a NLCS in fact the Philies are trying to avoid losing consecutive home games in the NLCS since 1978 against the Los Angeles Dodgers as the Dodgers would win the series 3-1 in the LCS was three out of best of five back then at that time. As for the Giants they have won nine out of their eleven games in the NLCS since 1989 when the Giants win game one in their two previous NLCS went on to win the National League Pennant they tonight need to stay firmly grounded and not get caught up in the hype with that hostile environment and contiunue to play their game.

Brian “Professor B” Davis staff writer- Well Giants fans on Saturday Night against their rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium at Chavez Ravine was another classic. This ranks up there with the Giants trailing 4-2 in the top half of the ninth inning to score four times in the ninth inning to to come from behind to win game three of the best of three playoff game to won the 1962 National League Pennant and to advanced to their first World Series since moving to the coast in 1958. Or in a game on Memorial Day weekend in May 28,1978 when Mike Ivie hit a pinch-hit grand slam off Dodgers ace and future Hall of Famer Don Sutton in a Giants win 6-5 in front of a sellout crowd of over 56,000 at Candlestick Park or four years later on on Sunday October 3, 1982 with the Giants who were eliminated the day before after the Dodgers stomped the Giants by a score of 15-2 the Dodgers came into the final day of the season needing to win against the Giants to force a one-game playoff with the Atlanta Braves the following day in Los Angeles when future hall of famer and a former two-time National League MVP Joe Morgan hit a three-run homer off of Dodgers reliever Terry Forester in the bottom half of the seventh inning to give the Giants a 5-3 win and sending the Dodgers home on the next train smoking and the Braves won the N.L. West by 1.0 game.

And one of my all time was in 1997 when the Giants and Dodgers clashed an another epic pennant race that year after the Giants won the first game of the two-game series then with a crowd of over 52,000 on a hot Thursday afternoon when Giants catcher Brian Johnson and Oakland native who played high school baseball at Skyline High School and played and a member of the repeat 1988 Stanford Cardinal College World Series team hit a walk-off homer to give the Giants a dramatic 6-5 win as the Giants would win 8 out of their next 10 games to win their first N.L West title since 1989 and the game against the Dodgers for Giants fans was no exception. The Giants in this game on Saturday Night trailed the Dodgers 4-0 in the seventh inning the Giants got their first runs on homers by rookie Buster Posey and Edgar Renteria in the seventh & eight innings then Pat Burrell’s homer off over Dodgers set up man Octovio Dotel to make the game 4-3. Then in the ninth inning after Cody Ross legged out a infield hit Juan Uribe who came in the game with a 2-for-22 slump hit a two-run homer to give the Giants a 5-4 lead. Giants closer Brian Wilson got out of jam with the tying run at run third base to get his 39th save of the season and ties him for fourth place with Greg Minton on the all-time San Francisco Giants list with 125 saves With the win the Giants are now 2.0 games back behind the San Diego Padres in the National League West who have lost their 9th straight game by losing to the Colorado Rockies by a score of 6-2 and the Giants are still 3.0 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League wild card race will go for the rubber match of the game series down at Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles for the Giants it will Johnathan Sanchez vs Hiroki Kuroda the first pitch will be at 5:05 pm pst on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN.

Brian “Professor B” Davis

Staff Writer- In today’s baseball news & notes- The San Francisco Giants has claimed outfielder Cody Ross from the Florida Marlins on Monday. The 29-year old outfielder who the giants claimed off wavers last Friday so far this season is hitting .265 with 10 home runs with 58 RBIs in 120 games for the Marlins this season will provide the Giants some flexibillity off the bench and could start in various occasionally. Ross has a career .264 with 83 homers and 312 RBIs in his seven big league seasons. Ross best season was last years when he put up a career high with a .270 average, 24 homers & 90 RBIs in 151 games but ther Marlins want to have an spot for outfielder Cameron Maybin who came to the Marlins along with pitcher Andrew Miller in return in the Dontrelle Willis & Miguel Caberra trade during the 2007 winter meetings trade.

To make room for Ross the Giants has designated infielder Matt Downs for assignment according to San Jose Mercury News Andy Baggarly reports the Giants have at least 10 days to either trade or release him outright or and or when he clear wavers he can accept a minor league assignment or elect to be a free agent. Downs 26, last year on Baseball America’s top 25 prospects at number 24 on the Giants list.

In baseball’s news according to a report from SI’s Jon Heyman the Boston Red Sox has put a waver clam on Detroit Tigers outfielder Johnny Damon. If the Red Sox gets him they would be getting a diminishing Damon who at 36 saw his number slipped down this year. He’s only hitting only .270 and played only 286 innings. He’s also a type B free agent at the end of the season and it’s highly unlikely he would get arbitration.

And finally the San Francisco Giants will take on the N.L Central leading Cincinnati Reds at AT&T Park for the first of a three-game series. For the Giants it will be Matt Cain with a 9-10 record with a 3.11 ERA against the Reds Edision Vaolquez 3-1 record with a 4.98 ERA.

BASEBALL INQUIER MULTIMEDIA REPORT THURSDAY APRIL 28, 2010

Brian “ProfesserB” Davis Staff Writer- The Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants in a classic by a score of 7-6 in 11 innings. The Giants a comanding 4-1 lead heading into the top of the ninth inning when with one out in the top half of the ninth inning when Giants manager Bruce Bochy pulled his ace Tim Lincecum in what would be a total managerial second guessing/questionable decision to bring in Giants closer Brian Wilson in to finish the game but after the Phillies loaded the bases Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth hits a bases loaded three run double down the right field line clearing the bases to tie the game at 4-4. The Phillies took the lead in the top half of the 10th inning the Phillies took a 5-4 lead when Phillies catcher Brian Schnider scored on a wild pitch then in the bottom half of the frame the Giants tied the game on a RBI hit by Andres Torres. Then in the top half of the 11th inning the Phillies took a 6-5 lead on a RBI double by shortstop Wilson Valdez scoring Raul Ibanez and added the important insurance run when Giants outfielder Eugino Velez’s error scoring Valdez to make it 7-5 Phillies. The Giants made the game 7-6 but Phillies reliever Nelson Figerueroa pitched out of a Giants rally to pick up his first win of the season (1-0) while Sergio Romo is the loser his record now drops to (0-2). Also Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard hits his first homer in 66 @ bats for baseball’s new $125 million man.

The final thoughts from yesterday’s game like the great line from the late Jim McKay from ABC’s Wide World Of Sports TV Series for the Phillies the thrill of victory and for the Giants and the agony of defeat I was listening to both radio talk show today to the Murph & Mac show on KNBR 680 in San Francisco hosted by Brian Murphy & Paul McCaffery and a lot of callers who ripped Giants manager Bruce Bochy for not letting Lincecum finsih the game. The Giants who already took two out of three from the Cardinals last weekend and was only a strike away from sweeping the two-time defending National League Champion Phillies and that all changed when Jayson Werth’s three-run double changed the game around. This loss is totally on Giants manager Bruce Bochy who should have kept his ace Lincecum in the game his final numbers he went 8.1/3 innings giving up three hits, two earned runs with 11 strikeouts and his ERA is a 1.27 ERA. And brining Eugenio Velez who dropped a routine fly ball to score another run for the Phillies and also listening to Sportsradio 610 WIP Radio based in Philadelphia Midday Show with Glen Macnow & Anthony Gargano on line ihad Phillies play-by-play man Tom McCarthy and they could not believe that Giants manager Bochy took the two-time National League Cy Young Award winner keep him the game but if you are a Phillies fan hey it was not pretty but we’ll take the win but for Giants fans you have to be totally be ********** on Bochy’s decision to bring in closer Brian Wilson and ripping Bochy for his decision but Giants fans it’s late April and Pennants are won in September & October not in April so don’t fret it’s not the end of the world like the classic track by Bobby McFerrin’s 1988 Grammy Award Winner Record Of the Year classic Don’t Worry Be Happy.

In NCAA baseball action on Wednesday the Arizona State Sun Devils laid the woodshead spanking to the USF Dons at Winkels/Packard Stadium at Jim Brock Field by a score of 21-3. The Dons took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning before the Sun Devils scored 21 unawnsed runs in four out of the next five innings. Sun Devils Riccio Torrez had another four-hit game perfomance while Deven Morrero and Zach Wilson had four RBI’s apeice and for the Dons senior catcher Ryan Lipkin smashed his 15th double of the season while also juniors Stephen Yarrow & Pete Lavin each had a double apiece the Dons as a team extends their West Coast Conference team leading 114 leading doubles for the season. With the loss the Dons drops their record to (22-20) while the 2nd ranked Sun Devils improves thier record to (35-5). The Dons will be back on the hilltop on Friday for the first od the three-game weekend series against the San Diego Torreros in West Coast Conference Friday’s game will be at 3:00pm pst and Saturday & Sunday @ 1:00pm pst.
